Do I need to replace my insulation when I get a roof repair?
30 April, 2025
If you’ve just had your roof repaired, or are preparing for some repair work, then you will also need to assess the condition of your roof insulation, to determine whether that will also need replacing.
A roof repair doesn’t automatically require you to replace your roof insulation. In fact, in most cases, the roof insulation will be perfectly fine to continue using.
However, in some specific instances, you may find that your roof insulation has been compromised, as a result of the roof repair. So, it’s always best to check!
Below, we’ve shared our guide to understanding when to replace roof insulation after a roof repair.
When should you consider replacing your roof insulation?
After the majority of roof repair jobs – particularly minor repairs or ongoing maintenance – your insulation will not require a replacement. Your insulation will not be altered during the repair, so will remain in exactly the same condition.
However, if the repair was to address severe roof damage, then you will need to check your insulation. This is because your insulation could also have been compromised, as a result of the same cause of the roof damage.
Common causes of severe roof damage include storms, and unaddressed leaks or long-term water ingress.
So, if roof damage has caused any of the following to occur, you should consider replacing your roof insulation:
- If water has reached the insulation and soaked it through – This can compromise the performance of your insulation, and present health risks.
- If mould or mildew have started to develop – Moisture and damp environments can also lead to mould growth.
- If you can see that your insulation has started to compact – This also seriously affects the performance of your insulation.
- If your insulation is discoloured or starts to smell – These are signs of insulation being water damaged, particularly a strong damp smell.
- If your energy bills start to spike – If your heating costs remain high after the roof repair, or your home still feels cold without a clear reason, then this could be an indicator that your roof insulation has been damaged.
- If you feel cold spots or drafts – Uneven indoor temperatures (particularly near ceilings) are another common sign of faulty insulation.
Top tips for looking after your insulation
You can help keep your roof insulation in good condition – and so maximise its lifespan – by:
- Checking it carefully after a roof repair
- Thoroughly inspecting the insulation for moisture after a roof leak
- Ensuring your loft or attic is well ventilated
- Keeping an eye on your energy usage (an unexpected spike is an indicator that your insulation may be faulty, so is ready for an inspection)
- Avoiding compressing your insulation (e.g. by adding heavy storage boxes on top)
- Keeping your roof well maintained, and arranging an ongoing maintenance schedule with a trusted roofing specialist
