Do you need to replace the full roof or just the damaged tiles?

31 October, 2024

If you spot an issue with your roof, then it is key to arrange a repair as quickly as possible.

It’s imperative that you tackle an issue head-on, before it is allowed to escalate (into a far more costly problem!).

In some instances, you can arrange for a specialist to fix your roof by simply replacing a few damaged tiles. However, in other cases, a full roof replacement is required.

At Stapleford Roofing, we are roofing experts with a skilled team of roofing repair specialists. So for this article, we’ve answered a few of our clients’ most common FAQs, and shared our guide to understanding roof repairs.

Keep reading to find out whether your roofing issues can be rectified with an update or repair of your tiles, or if you need a full roof or partial roof replacement.

Can roof tiles be replaced?

The short answer is yes, roof tiles can be replaced.

If a few singular roof tiles are damaged, cracked or missing, or you see an issue arising within a small area of your roof, then a roofing specialist can quickly and easily replace a few tiles for you.

This is a great way to resolve the issue (before it is allowed to escalate), but in a quick and cost-effective way.

However, only replacing the damaged tiles tiles isn’t always the best course of action. In some instances, the best solution long-term is to replace the entire roof. We’ll cover these instances in more detail below.

What are the most common causes of roof damage?

Of course, roofs are built to last. They are designed to withstand weather extremes, and hold their own for many years.

But, there comes a point where any roof will – inevitably – incur some damage.

The most common causes of roof damage include:

  • Strong winds
  • Debris falling on a roof, during a storm
  • Heavy rain
  • Hail, snow and ice
  • Prolonged heat exposure
  • Cracks (which can create leaks, if water continuously seeps through)
  • Condensation or ventilation issues
  • Aged roof materials, or a roof which has come to the end of its lifespan
  • Incorrect installation
  • Poor or insufficient maintenance
  • Pests, rodents or other animals

When it comes to roof installation, maintenance or repairs, enlisting the support of a roofing professional is always the best way to go.

By working with a roofing specialist like Stapleford Roofing, you can ensure that any preventable issues are addressed during regular maintenance schedules, and that your roof’s lifespan is extended as much as possible.

When does roof damage require tile replacements, and when is a full replacement necessary?

In some instances, your roof damage can be resolved by replacing a few broken tiles, and the rest of the roof can remain as is. However, more extensive or wider roof damage may constitute a full replacement.

Generally speaking, replacing the roof tiles may be sufficient to repair the roof if the issue is:

  • Missing tiles
  • Small leaks
  • Localised damage, spanning a small area of the roof
  • If your roof is made from newer materials, or your roof was recently replaced (so would otherwise have a long lifespan)

However, a full roof replacement is the best course of action if:

  • The cost of repairing the roof would be more than 50% of the original cost of the roof
  • The roof is difficult to access, which would drive up the costs of roof repair
  • The damage is extensive
  • Your roof is nearing the end of its life
  • The materials in your roof are ageing, which may mean further damage is likely to arise in the near future

If you’re unsure about the extent of your roof damage, or don’t know what would be the best repair option for you, then speak to a professional roofing specialist.

At Stapleford Roofing, our team are on hand to advise you, and provide professional guidance about your specific situation.

Can all roof damage be repaired?

In summary, not all roof damage can be repaired.

But, in many cases and if it is not extensive, roof damage can be repaired by a roofing specialist.

For example, tile damage, leaks, small holes, gutter issues and issues with your flashing can usually be repaired by a specialist, without extensive costs.

However in some cases, the repair job would be too extensive, or it would not be worth undertaking, and a full replacement would be the most cost-effective option in the long term.
